Currently, engineers have completed maintenance works on the ward and auditing is being carried out.

It is expected that the ward would be opened to patients in a few days’ time.

Closure

Last Monday, the KBTH closed the labour ward, limiting admission to patients with emergency cases.

This was because the oxygen plant at the ward developed a fault over the weekend.

Oxygen plants are industrial systems designed to generate oxygen mainly for use at health centres.

The hospital thus catered for only patients and pregnant women who were on admission before the challenge occurred.

The situation compelled the hospital to refer patients who reported at the facility to nearby hospitals and health centres.

Need for closure

Speaking to the Daily Graphic on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the KBTH, Mr Mustapha Salifu, said the closure of the ward became necessary because the hospital did not want to endanger  lives.

Since the oxygen plant was critical in the operations of the ward, he said, the ward could not go on with all its activities when the challenge occurred.

He reiterated that in-patients were being catered for, and added that all repair works had been completed and some auditing was being carried out to ensure that the plant worked more efficiently.

“Hopefully, by the close of day, everything will be done and the oxygen plant will start working properly for us to be able to admit new patients,” he added.
