The Leadership of Muslims in Ghana has called for calm among its members as they dialogue with stakeholders on the issue of religious discrimination in the country.

According to them, they are working with key stakeholders to ensure a strict adherence to the provision of the constitution on freedom of faith and worship for all.

A statement from the Chief Imam’s office Wednesday, said the recent demonstration by Muslims in the Western Region was an isolated case “born out of long frustration” since such  occurrences in the past have been met by dialogue with concerned institutional heads.

The group, therefore, expressed disappointment in the “uncompromising” position taken by the Christian Council (CC) and the Catholic Bishops’ Conference (CBC) as well as other earlier statements from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).

Describing the position of the CC, CBC, GES and GNAT as a “clear and deliberate” violation of their religious freedom guaranteed by the constitution, the group said, “Our demand has nothing to do with extremism, lawlessness or politics.”

“We, collectively, as Muslims, desire no confrontation whatsoever with any religious or any other group for that matter. We are simply asking all to respect our religious rights and freedoms as we give others, and as constitutionally guaranteed,” the statement said.

According to the group, they support the efforts of the National Peace Council to find a lasting and comprehensive solution to the matter.

“We are therefore urging the National Peace Council, as a matter of urgency to expedite action on the petition that was brought before it by the National leadership of the Muslim,” the statement said.
