Rainstorm destroys school and compels pupils to study under tree

A rainstorm last Sunday night hit the Asante Mampong Municipality in Ashanti, leading to the destruction of the Patasi-Sesease-Kokoben (PSK) MA primary school.

The storm destroyed the entire six-classroom block of the school including the furniture, staff common room and a store.

During a visit to the school by the Daily Graphic, pupils in classes one to six, numbering 118, were found studying under a big tree, making teaching and learning difficult. Some of the pupils are compelled to bring their own furniture.

Incident

According to the headmaster of the school, Mr Elvis Attakorah, about a month ago, the community complained in the media about the danger posed to children by the mud school structure, which was constructed about 50 years ago.

“There were gaping holes in the walls coupled with erosion that had eaten deep into the foundation of the structure.

“I was grateful to God and relieved when I was told that the building collapsed in the night. My brother, what do you think would have happened, if this disaster had occurred during school hours? I am grateful to God,” he said.

Teaching and Learning

Currently, Mr Attaborah said teaching and learning had become extremely challenging, because classes were being conducted under a tree.

He explained that teachers did not have boards to write on and sometimes had to resort to writing on sheets of paper for the pupils to read, copy and pass on.

According to him, the tree under which the pupils were currently studying was not conducive because of its closeness to a road. He said the pupils attention was always distracted anytime a vehicle passed by.

Appeal

Mr Attakorah made an appeal to the government, corporate entities and philanthropists to assist the community put up a befitting structure to replace the dilapidated school.

Breman Disaster

In January this year, six kindergarten pupils of the Breman Gyambra Methodist KG School in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa district in the Central Region died, after their run-down classroom block collapsed. Three other pupils sustained injuries in the disaster.
