Queenmothers urged to continue to exhibit leadership qualities

The First Lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama, has advised queenmothers to continue to exhibit leadership qualities by playing a central role in the development of their traditional areas.

She said women in leadership positions always acted as mediators, consultants, advisors, source of wisdom and a uniting force in their communities.

Mrs Mahama gave the advice at a colourful durbar during the enstoolment of Madam Rose Hiene, a Ghanaian businesswoman based in the United Kingdom, as the Tufuhemaa and queenmother of the New Akrade Traditional Area in the Eastern Region, under the stool name, Nana Lako I.

Custodians of stool

She said queenmothers in Ghana by their nature wielded power and influence as custodians of the stool and exhibited their roles in society as advocates for change.

According to the First Lady, who is also the Sumpahemaa of the Nkoransa Traditional Area under the stool name, Nana Akosua Ampomah Frema Sika I, one of the important roles of queenmothers, is to see to the welfare of members in the community, especially women and children, who are the most vulnerable.

“That is the position of our proverbial old lady in our tradition and culture, where the king and his elders are unable to resolve a difficult dispute or matter, they decide to adjourn and refer the matter to the ‘old woman’, who, with her knowledge and experience, is able to resolve the dispute where the men have failed,” she said.

Promoting health

Mrs Mahama indicated that promoting maternal health was one of the objectives of the programmes and activities that she had embarked on as the First Lady of this nation and President of the Organisation of African First Ladies Against HIV and AIDS (OAFLA).

She said her foundation, the Lordina Foundation, had also been working to eradicate ignorance, disease and poverty, especially among vulnerable women and children and with the support of donors and partners, she had presented medical equipment and supplies to over 120 health facilities across the  country.

She said the development of a nation depended on the health of the people and it was against this background that the government continued to invest heavily in health care in a number of deprived health facilities that still lacked medical equipment, and to support the government’s efforts, the foundation had acquired and presented a number of items to some hospitals across eight regions in Ghana.

She said her foundation, with the support of partners and sponsors, had been mobilising support  to enhance quality health care in under-served and deprived communities over the years, and indicated that the foundation’s medical mission module assisted the government by conducting medical outreaches across the country, which provided free HIV, cervical and breast cancer screening and counselling services.

She also urged all well-meaning citizens of Akrade to contribute to that worthy cause and give priority to the education of the girl-child which had several benefits for both parents and society.
