The students were from Pantang, Teshie, NarbhBita, Health Concern, Martin Luther and Green Hills training institutions in the Greater Accra Region.

Licensure

Licensure is an individual professional licence acquired after being tested and validated. It is illegal to practise in the country without the licence.

The test is, therefore, aimed at eliminating quacks in the nursing profession.

Programme

According to the Public Affairs Director of the university, Ms Victoria Chimbwanda, the students wrote the exams after undertaking a six-week intensive course accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana.

She said only two universities in the country, Wisconsin International University College in Accra and the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, offered the bridging programme which led to a BSc in Nursing.

“Experienced Nurse Assistant Clinical personnel have so far had limited options for upgrading their qualifications. The Access to Nursing course enables them to proceed to Level 200 of the BSc Nursing programme”, the director stated.

She indicated that a clinical assistant nurse with a three-year working experience could apply to improve on his/her career prospects.

Ms Chimbwanda underscored the need for students to learn and upgrade themselves in their respective areas of study.

The director added that the institution also offered opportunities to Nurse Assistant Clinical personnel to upgrade themselves by acquiring Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree in Nursing through an access course.
