Presby Young Adult Fellowship holds health screening for Adabraka residents

The Presbyterian Young Adult Fellowship (YAF) of the Adabraka Official Town Presbyterian Church last Saturday organised a blood donation and free health screening exercise as part of its 10th anniversary celebration.

The exercise, which was held in collaboration with the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), saw members of the church and residents of Adabraka and surrounding areas being screened for breast cancer, blood sugar, hepatitis, prostate enlargement, among other health conditions.

In all, 33 individuals donated blood to save lives, while 180 people benefited from the free health screening.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Chief Blood Donor Recruit of the National Blood Service (NBS), Mr David Dodzi Ahiadzor, underscored the need for the public to donate blood regularly, since it was good for their health and the health of others.

He said the service faced a challenge because it had not been able to achieve its maximum blood stock of 250,000 blood units annually to save lives.

Donors are healthy

Mr Ahiadzor said blood donation was a healthy exercise and, therefore, advised people to disabuse their minds of the notion that donating blood would negatively affect their health.

Ironically, he said, those who donated blood were healthy people and explained that as part of the process, blood donors underwent a lot of health checks, “and so when you qualify to donate blood, it means you are strong and healthy".

He indicated that the motivation for individuals to donate blood should be to save lives, some of whom could be their relatives.

Health status

A chairperson of the anniversary committee, Mr Frank Anane Frimpong, said the members of the fellowship decided to organise a blood donation and free health screening exercise as part of its 10th anniversary.

He said the fellowship decided to partner the GCGL to achieve its target of convincing people to do something for God and their country.

A beneficiary of the eye and hepatitis screening, Mr Antwi Owusu Banahene, said he took advantage of the free medical screening exercise to know his health status.
