Presby University admits 740 students

The Presbyterian University College, Ghana (PUCG), is a private university located at Abetifi-Kwahu in the Eastern Region. Established by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana on November  23, 2003 and inaugurated on  March 27, 2004 by then President John Agyekum Kufuor,

the university currently has five campuses at Abetifi-Kwahu, Akropong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region, Asante Akyem-Agogo and the Kumasi campus, which took off this year, as well as the city campus in Tema in the Greater Accra Region. Each of these campuses has its own set of faculties and other facilities.

2014 admissions

This year, the university has admitted 740 students to pursue various courses, including Nursing, Business Administration, Economics and Finance, Agribusiness and ICT.

Addressing the 12th matriculation ceremony at Abetifi in the Eastern Region, the acting President of the university, Professor Frank S. Arku, said in a recent web ranking, the university placed sixth among the over 50 private and public universities in the country and second among private universities in terms of performance.

He said the graduates of the PUCG through tracer studies were also doing well at their various work places.

"For example, some of our nurses are said to be on top of their jobs and distinguishing themselves professionally from others. This is not limited to our nurses but graduates from other programmes are also excelling at where they find themselves.

I used nurses as an example because it is one profession that many private universities in the country cannot handle well, however, the PUCG has proved beyond reasonable doubt that it is capable of handling all programmes", he added.

Professor Arku, therefore, commended the staff of the university for their dedication which has contributed to the growth of the PUCG.

Making considerable impact

He said the university was making considerable impact on the country but bemoaned the lack of adequate training facilities and called for incentives such as grants for training, infrastructure and scholarships to students to address some of the challenges to academic work.

He said the PUCG, due to limited facilities, had to turn down many applicants, particularly those who applied for nursing and physician assistant programmes, and was hopeful that the recent announcement by government that incentives would be given to private universities that would site their campuses outside the major cities, would benefit the PUCG since its campuses were all in rural settings.

Dress code

Professor Arku urged the matriculants to dress decently and warned that lecturers and assistant registrars have been asked to turn away students if found improperly dressed.

For his part, the chairperson of the Kwahu Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Reverend P. O.A.B. Bawua Bonsafo, entreated the matriculants to always remember to strive hard to achieve their goals by leading a good life, studying hard and staying focused.
