Polls end in the Northern Region without incident

Contrary to pre-elections concerns that the Northern Region would be one of the hotspots during the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections, the polls ended peacefully without any incident.

Monitoring done by Graphic Online across 31 constituencies in the Northern Region during the voting process indicated that the polls went on smoothly with no any major incidents.

Some of the challenges recorded at some polling stations were the inability of persons to be verified manually, while others who could not produce their identification cards were allowed to exercise their franchise per the rules set by the Electoral Commission.

The region also did not record any late start of the polls as the exercise began exactly 7am and ended at 5pm.

The EC and the security agencies identified 611 flashpoints out of the 2,688 polling stations ahead of the polls but the voting process went on smoothly in all the polling stations across the region.

Some observers, party agents and electoral officials commended the way voters conducted themselves.

Meanwhile counting is yet to begin and some residents hope that the declaration of results would also passed off peacefully as the voting process.

Although the process has been generally peaceful some people who could not be verified by the Biometric Verification Machines could not vote.
