According to him, “one way to curb galamsey is when our political leaders join hands to help fight it.”

Speaking at a forum organised by the Ghana Institute of Engineers (GhIE) in conjunction with the Media Coalition on the fight against galamsey on Thursday, Mr Ashigbey stated that leadership failure in the country has contributed to the increased activity of illegal mining.

To him, if all political parties were to join hands in fighting the menace, the problems currently being experienced will not be there.

Speaking at Soabe in the Eastern Region on Wednesday, President Akufo-Addo said, “I have been told that, some of the people engaged in illegal mining, have threatened to vote against the NPP in 2020, if I crack the whip on the culprits. I am more concerned about fulfilling God’s purpose and devising measures to propel the nation’s development. That’s my focus and not election related issues.”

This statement by President Akufo-Addo, according to Mr Ashigbey is commendable.

He said politicians held the key to the fight against illegal mining and therefore asked them assist.
