Police wage war on lawless drivers in Sunyani

The Brong Ahafo Regional Command of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service last Friday impounded about 300 motorbikes and vehicles in the Sunyani municipality in an exercise to bring sanity on the roads.

Offences that led to the seizure were driving and riding unregistered vehicles and motorbikes, driving and riding without licences, riding motorbikes without wearing helmet, using fake documents, driving vehicles with expired insurance and driving and riding non-insured vehicles and motorbikes.

Both private and commercial vehicles were seized during the exercise, while the motorbikes included tricycles, popularly known as ‘Aboboyaa’, ‘Azonto’ and ‘Pragya’.

They were impounded on the Odumase, Atronie and Abesim roads, the Penkwase Traffic Light, the Fiapre Barrier, the Sunyani Technical University, the Sunyani Post Office, the SSNIT Roundabout, among others.

The unannounced operation was part of the MTTD’s mandate to create discipline and sanity on the roads to avoid unnecessary accidents in the municipality.

Create discipline

The Brong Ahafo Regional Commander of the MTTD, Superintendent Stella Sedame, told the Daily Graphic that all those who were arrested would be processed for court, while those who would produce their documents would be served with warning letters.

According to her, the exercise was meant to create discipline and prevent unnecessary accidents.

She said the exercise was also meant to create awareness of the rules and regulations governing driving and the use of motorbikes and cautioned riders and drivers against violation of those rules and regulations.

Supt Sedame promised to carry out the exercise on regular basis and advised drivers and motorbike users to ensure that documents covering their motorbikes and vehicles were genuine.
