The suspected robber was arrested during a police operation at Ofankor early hours of yesterday, while driving a KIA Soranto Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with registration number AW 9434-14, believed to be a stolen vehicle.

The Police said Arthur is on police wanted list for allegedly orchestrating car snatching and robbery operations in Accra and Kumasi.

Police account

Explaining how the suspect was arrested, the Achimota Mile 7 Police Commander, Supt Iddrisu Tanko Issifu, told the Daily Graphic that the police received a tip-off another car snatching incident which was being used to defraud other people.

“We embarked on an operation on Monday night, which led to the arrest of the suspect around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. We found him wearing a military T-shirt, while a set of military uniform was also found on him, Sup Issifu said.

The suspect initially told the police he was a military officer with the 48 Engineers Regiment at Teshie, with staff number 1834. Upon further interrogation, however, he denied being a military officer, Supt. Issifu recounted.

According to the police commander, the suspect also said the military uniform he wore belonged to his uncle who was a military officer with the 48 Engineers.

“In his confession, he told the police that he was not a soldier, but that he took the uniform from a 207 vehicle given to him by his uncle, a Staff Sergeant with the 48 Engineers at Teshie,” he said.

Other arrests

In a related development, the Achimota Police have arrested three occupants of a taxi who were suspected to be on a robbery operation.

The three, Ernest Frimpong, 17, a caterer; Edward Adjei, 18, an electrician, and Yussif Mnai, 18, unemployed, were found in possession of daggers, knives and other weapons.

Supt Issifu said investigations were continuing and called on the public to collaborate with the police with information to help them clamp down on activities of criminals.
