Police declare war on land guard activities in Accra

The Accra Regional Police Command has declared war on land guards whose activities create insecurity in the country. Land guards are often hired by dealers in land to terrorise land owners, as such dealers sell lands to multiple persons.

They are particularly employed in some communities in the Greater Accra Region where chieftaincy disputes are rife.

The activities of the land guards have, on numerous occasions, resulted in creating commotions, leading to the loss of lives and property.

WASSA

At the 2016 end of year get-together, popularly known as the West African Security Association (WASSA) for police personnel of the Accra Regional Police Command, the Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Osabarima Oware Asare Pinkro, said chieftaincy and land related problems took 50 per cent of the working time of the police in the region.

The remaining 50 per cent of the working time of the police, he said, went into combating violence and general crime in the region.

“Sometimes the Greater Accra Regional Command becomes so perplexed about the high frequency of chieftaincy and land-guard problems to the extent that we are torn between maintenance of public order and combating general crime in the city,” he said.

DCOP Asare Pinkro, therefore, entreated the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs to tackle the chieftaincy problems in the region to enable the police to concentrate on fighting crime.

Major crimes

Mr Asare Pinkro, who assumed office on February 10, 2017, said apart from the chieftaincy and land guard issues, major crimes committed in the region included cyber crime, residential and street robbery  illegal possession of arms and ammunitions and motorbike offences.

He also used the opportunity to commend the military for its continued support for the command and for maintaining good working relationship with the police.

The commander cited the recent violence clashes at Agbogbloshie in Accra as an example of how the police and military could work together to eventually bring the violent situation under control.

Decongestion

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Ishmael Ashitey, called on the different ethnic groups in the region to learn to co-exist.

“The police, executive members of the various groups and individuals at Agbogbloshie must resolve to make sure they contribute to the maintenance of peace and order in the region,” he added.
