The suspects, Li Fan Fan, 25, and Liu Liang, 29, were arrested last Thursday at a galamsey site at Kodobeda, a suburb of Anyinam in the Atiwa District in the Eastern Region. A third suspect is, however, on the run.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Ebenezer Tetteh, the suspects, who were seen lurking around the galamsey site during the busy hours of the day, were picked up upon a tip-off.

Arrest

Mr Tetteh said the police, who were led by the District Police Commander, Superintendent Isaac Asiedu, and the District Chief Executive of Anyinam, Mr Kwabena Panin, arrested Li Fan Fan and Liu Liang but the third suspect managed to escape.

He added that the two suspects led the police to their place of abode where the officers retrieved a water pumping machine, a hose, four excavator parts and a quantity of sand in a plastic container believed to contain gold.

He said they were subsequently transferred from Anyinam to the Eastern Regional Police headquarters where their statements were taken.

Discovery

He said in the course of the arrest, an excavator was found parked at one of the mining sites, which, sources said, was used to mine at night.
