He was charged with rape when he appeared before the court, presided over by Isaac Addo, on August 9, 2016, but his plea was not taken.

Lawyer for Mensah, Mr Nashiru Yussif, prayed for bail for his client, saying that the Supreme Court has ruled all offences bailable.

Mr Addo, however, said that the court had no power to try cases like rape. “I have listened to the counsel submission, this court has no power to try cases like rape, and therefore bail is refused.”

The case has been adjourned to September 26, 2016.

Presenting the facts of the case to the court, the prosecutor, Sergeant Lois Konadu, told the court that the complainant, is a student living at Pokuase while Mensah is a Head pastor and founder of Palace Chapel at Fise, a suburb of Amasaman.

Prosecutor Konadu said on August 20, 2016 at about 10:00a.m., the victim visited Mensah in his house to report her husband’s conduct towards her.

According to prosecution, Mensah after listening to her offered her a seat in his room. Mensah then poured anointing oil on the victim’s hands, and asked her to lie down so he would pray for her.

She then lay supine on the floor with her eyes closed as instructed. Before she knew, the accused was on top of her and had sexual intercourse with her without her consent.

Sergeant Konadu said after the act, Ruth sat in Mensah’s vehicle and he drove her to her house.

On August 23 2016, she reported the matter to DOVVSU, Amasaman and was issued with a medical form to attend hospital where the Police issued her a medical report.

She said Mensah was later arrested.
