Parties commend Graphic for Town Hall meetings

Representatives of three political parties have commended the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) for bringing political parties and stakeholders together to deliberate on the need for good governance in the country.

They said since the 2012 elections, the GCGL, under its town hall meetings programme, had contributed, in no small measure, to ensuring peace before, during and after elections.

The parties — the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) — also lauded the GCGL for its outstanding fair and balanced reportage on political activities in the country.

The commendations were made by Mr Yaw Asiedu, the Central Regional Director of Elections for the NDC; Mr Kwamena Duncan, the Central Regional Secretary of the NPP, and Mr Bright Edem Droefenu, the parliamentary aspirant of the PPP in the Cape Coast South Constituency, when they took their turn to share their parties’ perspectives on peace before, during and after the December 7 elections.

It was at the Graphic Town Hall Meeting in Cape Coast last Wednesday which brought together stakeholders, including the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), some civil society organisations, traditional authorities, people from Muslim communities, academia and fishing communities.

The meeting, which was the fourth in a series of town hall meetings, was on the  theme: “Good governance: Key to development and growth in Ghana”.

Similar town hall meetings had already been organised in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region and Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

NPP

“My view of the Daily Graphic is that it has always been outstanding, but the human institution that it is, there can also be some errors,” Mr Duncan said.

He said it was important for the media to be mindful of screaming headlines and sensitive to issues that could divide the nation and avoid incitement in the political discourse, since the days leading to the December 7 elections were critical.

NDC

Mr Asiedu expressed appreciation to the GCGL for offering political parties and the electorate a common platform to share ideas on good governance and how to move the nation forward.

In his opinion, the Daily Graphic has always been fair in its reportage and lauded it for the good work.

He pledged the NDC’s commitment to work with the media to improve the lives of majority of the people, as well as ensure peaceful co-existence.

PPP

Mr Droefenu shared in the sentiments expressed by the other parties, saying, “We need a free and fair electoral process so that its outcome will be accepted by all”.

“Things are not fine in Ghana, but it is better we live in peace than to live in someone else’s country as refugees,” he said.
