‘Parents should inculcate discipline in children’

Accra Metropolitan Director of Education Kwesi Hutchful has asked parents to start inculcating discipline into their children right from childhood.

He said since the character of every child begins from his childhood years, it was extremely crucial for every parent to monitor their children’s development, especially the behaviour they pick up as they grow.

At the 30th anniversary and graduation ceremony of Mizpah International School at Tesano in Accra, Mr Hutchful urged parents not to leave the responsibility of instilling discipline in their children in the hands of teachers alone.

He said without the participation of parents in ensuring discipline in their children, no teacher could help change the personality of a child.

Established in 1986, Mizpah started as a preschool operating in two classrooms, an office, and a sickbay.

The school began with seven children, comprising four boys and three girls. In two years, the number rose to 200 with six teachers and seven non-teaching staff.

Currently, Mizpah has a population of more than 1,000 schoolchildren from preschool to the junior high level.

Don’t spoil them

Addressing the gathering on the theme, “Mizpah 30 years of academic excellence, challenges and the way forward,” Mr Hutchful cautioned parents against spoiling their children just because they could afford to do so.

He said most parents allowed their children to have anything they wanted because they have the money to provide.

“When you do that you expose them to a life of ‘I will take what I want when I want’. This is very deadly in their formative years,” Mr Hutchful said.

He said there was the need for every parent to pay close attention to their children, since every negative behaviour has the tendency to harm their future prospects.

Mizpah ambition

The Proprietress of Mizpah International School, Mrs Margaret Linda Bray, said the school was built to provide quality and affordable education to Ghanaians.

“The vision of Mizpah School is to be a centre for academic and moral excellence so as to respond to the ongoing National Reforms in the education sector,” she said.

According to Mrs Bray, the school continues to maintain high academic standards through hard work and discipline.

For his part, the Headmaster of the school, Mr Nuete Nyumutei Ologo, mentioned the late payment of school fees as one of the major challenges affecting most private schools, including Mizpah.

He, therefore, called on parents and other stakeholders to help address the problem to ensure the attainment of quality education.
