PAC directs GES to report 44 former employees to police
The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) office in Half Assini in the Western Region to report 44 former employees of the service to the police for failure to return unearned salaries totalling GH¢117,000 to state coffers.

The 2013 Auditor General's Report made the disclosure that the 44 former employees had been paid unearned salaries since 2011.
When the PAC sought clarification from the Jomoro District Director of Education, Mr Blay-Ackah Quayson, on the latest on the money in Accra Wednesday, he indicated that the office was unable to trace the former employees.
He said the difficulty was that the people were no longer in the service of the GES, while some of them were reported to be dead.
Mr Quayson said the original number of teachers who had received unearned salaries was 64 and indicated that the office was able to reduce the number to 44.
He said the office had reported the issue to the police and expressed the hope that the police would help the office to retrieve the money.
Unearned salaries again
The PAC again directed the GES office in the Mampong municipality in the Ashanti Region to report 25 former employees of the service to the police for failure to return unearned salaries to state coffers since 2011.
The 2012 Auditor General's Report made the disclosure that the 25 former employees were paid unearned salaries amounting to GH¢14,255.
The Mampong Municipal Accountant of the GES, Mr Kwabena Obeng Agyekum, told the PAC that the office was unable to trace the former employees.
He said some of the people were no longer in the service of the GES, while others were said to be dead.
Dishonoured misappropriation
The acting Chairman of the PAC, Mr Samuel Atta Akyea, said the attitude of the former employees amounted to dishonoured misappropriation of public funds.
"They are very very serious infractions. The sums are huge," he said.
He expressed the hope the police would do well to trace the former GES employees, so that they would refund the money to the state.
