In a short speech, he requested that personnel of the service should be provided with arms and ammunition to aid them in the work of strengthening border patrols.

On a personal level, he gave thanks to God for his grace, wisdom, protection and guidance bestowed on him in his 38 years in a challenging public working life that began on January 2, 1979 with the GIS, then a department under the Ministry of the Interior.

In an address, the Minister of the Interior, Mr Ambrose Dery, said Mr Sarpong started service from humble beginnings as a junior officer and rose through the ranks to become a commissioned officer of the service by dint of hard work and dedication.

He added that during his tenure as comptroller he offered inspirational and visionary leadership to the GIS. He said Mr Sarpong was an astute officer credited with having completed a number of projects initiated by his predecessors, key among which are the three-storey office building and blocks of flats at Menuso.

For his part, Mr Asuah Takyi, Comptroller General of the Ghana Immigration Service, said the service recognised and appreciated the valuable contributions the outgoing comptroller general made to the service.
