One week of Constable Owusu’s death observed

The traditional one-week observance of the death of Constable Daniel Owusu who was shot dead by armed robbers in Accra while on duty was marked in Accra yesterday,

Constable Owusu, who was with the Tesano Community Policing Unit, was shot dead on July 13, 2017, at Abeka Lapaz in Accra.

The solemn occasion brought together scores of sympathisers, including family members and friends, as well as the Tesano Policing Community Unit fraternity to remember and mourn the fallen hero.

Also in attendance was the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Appeatu, and his entourage from the Police Management and Advisory Board.

However, as of midday, no government official was around to empathise with the bereaved family.

Some of the sympathisers donated items such as boxes of bottled water, soft drinks and undisclosed amounts of money to the family.

Constable Owusu’s widow, Madam Margaret Boahemaa, appealed to the government to help cater for their six children.

“I am not capable of taking care of the children, most of whom are yet to complete basic education,” she bemoaned.

Media briefing

Briefing the media at the ceremony, the Director of Police Public Affairs, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mrs Sheilla Abayie-Buckman, refuted claims that the police had arrested the killers of Constable Owusu.

“As far as the police are concerned, we have not arrested the alleged killers. Though the police keep arresting people who they think have connection with it, at the moment, you cannot come out and say suspects have been arrested,” she stated.

DSP Abayie-Buckman, therefore, urged the public to volunteer information and offer the necessary support that could lead to the arrest of the killers, adding that it was important people collaborated with the police to deal with miscreants in the society to ensure sustained peace in the country.

She said people could assist the police in cash and in kind to provide protective gadgets for personnel to be used in the line of duty, adding, “We have funds but it is not enough.”
