Known in private life as Francis Andzie, Obrempong Nyanful becomes arguably the youngest chief to assume that position at the age of 44.

Election

Obrempong Nyanful contested four other chiefs, but managed to secure eight votes to emerge as the winner out of 26 votes cast to serve a four-year term. His other contenders were Odeefuo Amoakwa Buadu, who managed to poll six votes; Okatakyi Dr Amenfi, five votes; Ehunabobrim Pra Agyensem, garnered four votes and Okokodurfo Ogyeabokwamina Hamma Ababio, who also managed three votes.

The ceremony was graced by a former Central Regional Minister, Mr Thomas Aquinas Tawiah Quansah, and some District Chief Executives and other dignitaries in the region.

Acceptance speech

In his acceptance speech, Obrempong Nyanful commended his predecessor for building a foundation that would enable his (Obrempong’s) administration to build upon for the benefit of the next generation.

He said the region could boast of the best educational institutions in the country, and that with the support of the institutions and other stakeholders, he would ensure that the region gained back its lost glory.

On the need for quota admission, he pledged to lobby for admissions at all levels of the educational institutions for the chiefs as well as ensure that heads of educational institutions accounted for the falling standards of education in the region.

“It is disheartening to hear that each year some of the worst performing schools in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) came from the region, and my priority will be quality education for our children,” he said.

‘Tap into resources’

While commending the government for the numerous development projects it had executed, he urged it to tap into the natural resources in the region to create jobs for the teeming unemployed youth so as to better their lives.

He further called on the government to provide financial assistance through the Medium and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) to traders, farmers, fisher folks and the entrepreneurial youth to enable them to engage in businesses that would improve economic activities in the region.

Obrempong Nyanful also promised to promote Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to resolve all chieftaincy disputes since litigation was time consuming and expensive.

“To be able to do that effectively, laws will be formulated and implemented on succession to thrones as well as to safeguard lands in the region,” he added. He assured the gathering that he was not going to do everything all by himself, hence he needed the support of everyone to be able to particularly complete some ongoing projects initiated by his predecessor.
