NVTI cries for help to retool 34 training institutes

The National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) has appealed for support to help provide modern tools and equipment for its 34 training institutes across the country.

Speaking at a thanksgiving service at its headquarters in Accra last Sunday, the Executive Director of NVTI, Mrs Mawusi Nudekor Awity, revealed that the last time the institutes under the NVTI were provided with new tools was in 1998.

“We are very much concerned about this state of affairs because we may end up turning out graduates who are already obsolete before they enter the job market,” she said.

Apart from the lack of tools, Mrs Awity mentioned the lack of adequate infrastructure and vehicles as some of the challenges hampering NVTI’s operations.

“Our institutes could have admitted more trainees but for the lack of infrastructure and inadequacy of modern tools and equipment. I will take this opportunity to appeal to corporate institutions, donor partners as well as private individuals to come to our aid,” she said.

The thanksgiving service, which brought together workers of NVTI from all over the country, the Clergy and other well-wishers was meant to show appreciation to God for NVTI’s existence over the years.

Successes

Despite its many challenges, Mrs Awity said NVTI had also chalked up lots of successes such as the training of over 500 refugees.

“We have a total trainee population of 16,450 in the 34 vocational institutions with over 700 graduating every year. Above all, over 60 per cent of our graduates have been employed or are self–employed,” she said.

NVTI, she said, was also not oblivious to the huge youth unemployment situation in the country, which had been made worse due to the enormous focus on “grammar type of education to the neglect of skills training.”

Sermon

In a sermon titled: “United for Progress,” Bishop Dusan Pobee of the Transformed Life Ministries urged workers of NVTI to be united to help the institution achieve its mandate of promoting vocational education in the country.

“Every institution needs a lot of things to progress and unity is one of the essential things. Be united so that any initiative of NVTI becomes fruitful,” he said.
