NUYA supports development of education in Yilo Krobo

The Yilo Krobo Municipal Director of Education, Mr Augustine Adusei, has lauded the initiative of the National Union of Yilo Krobo Youth Association (NUYA) and the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr Magnus Kofi Amoatey, for promoting education in the municipality.

He said the possibility of providing quality education in the 21st century could only be achieved through collaborative efforts of all stakeholders.

He, therefore, called on citizens of Yilo Krobo and other public-spirited individuals and corporate organisations to assist in raising the standard of education in the area.

“On behalf of the Yilo Krobo Municipal Directorate of Education, I commend you for your support and collaboration in helping to raise the educational standards of the youth,” Mr Adusei stated.

Mr Adusei was speaking at the end of the Yilo Krobo Inter-Circuit Basic Schools Annual Quiz Competition held at Oterkpolu and organised by NUYA, with sponsorship from the Eastern Regional Office of the National Investment Bank Limited.

The participating circuits of education were Klo-Agogo, Opersika, Nkurakan, Somanya North, Somanya South, Obawale-Huhunya, Nsutapong and Oterkpolu.

The municipal director of education noted that ever since NUYA took interest in education in the municipality, the performance of students had improved substantially.

He praised the MP for his immense support for  the holiday classes organised for students preparing to sit for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

He said hitherto, the municipality scored an average of 32 per cent in the BECE. However, results in the examination improved sharply to 91 per cent last year. He attributed the improved performance to the support received through the  MP’s extra holiday classes.

Mr Adusei said the municipality had set a target of 95 per cent pass in this year’s BECE and as such urged all stakeholders, including teachers, to help achieve it.

The quiz competition was won by the Somanya South Circuit of schools  with 35 points, followed by Nkurakan with 33 points and Klo-Agogo with 32 points. Somanya North, Oterkpolu, Nsutapong, Obawale-Huhunya and Opersika placed fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth respectively with 26, 25, 21,19 and 18 points.

The Somanya South Circuit took home GH¢400.00 in addition to stationery, while the second and third circuits received GH¢300.00 and GH¢200.00 respectively plus stationery. The other participating circuits received stationery as consolation prizes.

Mr Amoatey, who was a special guest of honour for the occasion, also gave each of the 18 participants in the competition GH¢50.00 as motivation.

In addition, he gave the first-placed circuit GH¢500.00, GH¢300.00 to the second-placed circuit, GH¢200.00 to the third-placed circuit and a GH¢100.00 each to the remaining five circuits.
