The books, Sickle Cell Simply Explained and First Aid in Childhood Illness, were written by an experienced a paediatrician and Child Health specialist, Dr John Koramoa, with sponsorship from the Ntiamoh Foundation.

The books launch coincided with the celebration of World Sickle Cell Day and also formed part of the 10th anniversary of the Ntiamoah Foundation.

Source of knowledge

Dr Koramoa said he found that he had been answering the same questions over and over again during the practice of his profession and said the books would help answer those questions.

He expressed the hope that the knowledge which would be acquired from the books would enable people to participate in the health care of children with health professionals. It would also help to do away with the many myths and misconceptions associated with the condition.

The first book, Sickle Cell Simply Explained, focuses on the importance of every human being knowing their sickling status before marriage. He said it was important for sufferers of the disease and health professionals to know how to manage the ailment.

First Aid

On First Aid in Childhood Illness, Dr Koramoa said it was important for every parent to know about childhood illnesses and how to provide first aid before seeing a health professional if it becomes necessary.

“I hope with the launch of these two books, my desire to impart the knowledge that I have acquired over the years in medical practice will benefit society,” he said.

For his part, Mr Robert K Asante, Executive Chairman of Ntiamoah Foundation, said his organisation which operates mainly in the Akyem area in the eastern region will continue to support health and education in the country.

Philanthropic works

Mr Asante intimated that writing the books had reaffirmed his commitment to continue with philanthropic endeavours in education and health.

“Our key achievements in those sectors include the donation of an ambulance to the Ministry of Health for the New Abirem hospital, regular donations to CHPS compounds in the catchment area and donation of medical items. Within the last ten years Ntiamoah Foundation has been working tirelessly to make a great impact through our contributions for the improvement of lives of people in Ghana” Mr Asante said.

Mr Godfred Nyanteh, Director of Health Education on Wheels, in his contribution commended the author and Ntiamoa Foundation for the effort at promoting health and education for the benefit of Ghanaians.

The ceremony was chaired by Justice S. A. Brobbey, a former Supreme Court judge.
