He was said to have been using an AK47 rifle to terrorise some residents of Denkyira, near Amanfrom, in the Greater Accra Region.

The suspect, whose name was given by the police as Nii Odartey Wellington, aka Kankpe, until his arrest, was said to be operating with two other persons currently at large.

Wellington and his accomplices are said to have shot four persons in an attack and also engaged in a number of robbery cases in the area.

Wanted suspect

Briefing journalists in Accra yesterday, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr Timothy Yoosa Bonga, the Accra Regional Police Commander said Wellinton had been on the police wanted list for the past five years until his arrest on Thursday, August 10, 2016.

He said Wellington on December 15,2015, together with his accomplices, interrupted a meeting being held by a family at Denkyira, wiedling an AK47 rifle and other deadly weapons.

They shot, indiscriminately hitting two persons in the thigh while two others sustained various degrees of injuries following the attack on the family.

Mr Bonga said Wellington and his accomplices fled after committing the act while the injured victims were being taken to the Amanfrom Hospital.

On December 20, 2016, Mr Bonga said  Wellington and his gang again  attacked another person who they subjected to severe beatings after which they robbed him of 20 bags of cement, and of GH¢600

On March 29, this year, he said the gang again attacked some residents of the community around 12:30pm and subjected their victims to brutal beatings.

That notwithstanding, he said, Wellington and his gang undressed the victims , and made them march through the town.

They later forced the victims to kneel on stones while carrying five blocks each on their heads.

On May 19, 2016, Mr Bonga said the police received another complaint that the suspects went on the rampage around 10p.m. at  Denkyira amidst firing of arms.

Mr Bonga said the suspect and his accomplices, who had been evasive, often fled to an unknown location anytime the matter was reported to the police, only to resurface and attack the residents later.

Due to the compelling cases against the suspect, he said, the Amasaman police on July 21, 2016, referred the case to the Regional Police Command for further investigation.

He said the suspect was arrested on August 10, 2016, upon a tip-off. Investigations are ongoing to arrest his accomplices.
