He said the government would this year recruit 2,500 Science and Mathematics teachers for the community day senior high schools.

Addressing the people of Yendi as part of his ‘Accounting to the people’ tour of the Northern Region yesterday, Mr Mahama said the government had added 6,000 beds in the various hospitals across the country which would increase employment opportunities in the health sector.

He further explained that it had created different modules under the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) in order to reduce employment in the country.

Airport

Touching on the Tamale Airport, President Mahama said three test flights would be used at the airport this year to airlift pilgrims in northern Ghana to Mecca without having to travel to Accra.

He indicated that funding had been secured to continue the second phase of the upgrading of the airport.

He added that a cargo terminal would be constructed at the airport to facilitate the exportation of farm produce from northern Ghana.

Mr Mahama said with the construction of the cargo terminal, business opportunities would be opened in the savannah ecological zone.

Education

As part of the tour, he inaugurated an engineering laboratory at the Tamale Polytechnic.

He also inspected work at the Dabokpa Technical and Vocational Institute in the Tamale metropolis.

He said the government would continue to invest in technical and vocational education.

Mr Mahama said the development of technical universities and vocational institutes was critical to the development of the country's human resource.

Touching on senior high school (SHS) admissions, he said 123 of the community day SHSs were on contract and that when completed, they would create about 184,000 admission spaces for junior high school graduates.

That, he explained, would lessen the burden on the existing SHSs in the country.

Dagbon

Mr Mahama commended the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya-Na Andani Yakubu Abdulai, for ensuring peace in the area.

He said the government was committed to ensuring that there was lasting peace and security in the area.

He also assured the chiefs and people of Yendi of the government's commitment to solve the water problem in the Yendi municipality.

Na-Andani Abdulai

In his welcome address, Na-Andani Abdulai, who is also the President of the Dagbon Traditional Council, commended the government for establishing SADA to facilitate the development of the savannah ecological zone.

He, however, urged SADA to do more by way of improving the standard of living of the people in the ecological zone.

He said Dagbon was appreciative of the efforts being made by the government towards promoting and consolidating the peace and security in the area.
