NMC lauds Graphic Town Hall meetings initiative

The National Media Commission (NMC) has commended the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) for organising town hall meetings to create awareness of electoral processes and help promote peaceful elections.

The Chairman of the NMC, Mr Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, said the town hall meetings concept was a good initiative by the GCGL, as it facilitated a direct interaction among the electorate, the political parties and other stakeholders.

Besides, he said, the messages delivered at the meetings resonated well with the people.

Mr Gyan-Apenteng gave the commendation at a meeting between the members of the NMC and the directors of the GCGL at the group’s headquarters in Accra yesterday.

“We commend the GCGL for organising the town hall meetings, which go directly to the people,” he said.

In the main, the NMC used the meeting to inform the directors of the state-owned media house about the commission’s programmes towards this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections.

Media challenged

Mr Gyan-Apenteng said it was important that the GCGL had initiated the town hall meetings concept, as it promoted interaction between the electorate and the stakeholders and contributed towards achieving peaceful elections.

He urged the media to promote more of such engagements, noting, though, that funding was a challenge.

Female parliamentary candidates

The NMC Chairman also lauded the GCGL for dedicating some pages in The Mirror to campaign for female parliamentary candidates.

“The campaign for female parliamentary candidates is good. It is nicely done in The Mirror,” he added.

The Managing Director of the GCGL, Mr Kenneth Ashigbey, said in view of Election 2016, the GCGL had so far organised the town hall meetings in Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo, Koforidua in the Eastern and Cape Coast in the Central regions and described the impact as significant.
