NHIA cautions service providers

The National Health Insurance Authority has warned its service providers that their claims may be rejected if they fail to apply for the renewal of their licences six months before they expire.

As per the NHIA Law (Act 852), service providers are required to apply for the renewal six months prior to the expiry of their licences.

But according to the Acting Brong Ahafo Regional Director of the authority, Mr Aminu Yakubu, some providers paid no heed to this requirement and thus re-apply for credentials when their status is about to expire.

He was addressing district managers of the authority during the 2015 third-quarter review meeting in Sunyani.

The meeting was held to review the performance of the NHIA in the region and to provide the staff with the opportunity to refine their strategies in order to meet planned objectives.

Monitoring activities

Mr Yakubu said the NHIA in the region had been monitoring the activities of service providers’ sites to ensure compliance to its tariff, medicine list, among other protocols.

He said the delay in the renewal of credentials of service providers, especially government facilities, had been one of the key findings during the period under review.

“Service providers are kindly reminded that the law mandates the NHIA to reject claims of service providers whose credentials have expired”, he said.

Biometric registration

Mr Yakubu disclosed that the biometric registration exercise in the region had been operational in all the 20 district offices in the region for almost four months now, adding that the results had been positive.

He stated that as of the end of September, this year, the region had produced a total of 448,200 cards for beneficiaries of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Mr Aminu explained, however, that as of the end the third quarter of 2015, registered and active members in the region were 783,982 out of a target of 1,232,356, representing 64 per cent coverage.

“ I urge all district offices to vigorously engage in a registration exercise and devise strategies to reach out to the communities, work as a team and be prepared to work at odd times, on weekends and holidays,” he said.

Collection of premiums

On premium mobilisation, Mr Yakubu said the region recorded 31 per cent above its target by recording a whopping GH¢3, 951,191 as of the end of September, 2015, exceeding its target of GH¢3, 013,746.

He asked officials of the authority to admit that the NHIA had witnessed dramatic reforms in recent times with performance measurement being a critical part of the reforms and asked them to work hard to achieve their set goals.
