New board of GCAA takes office

The re-constituted board of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has been urged to facilitate a partnership between the GCAA and the private sector to enable the authority to provide modern and attractive aviation infrastructure.

It has also been tasked to support the GCAA to complete its various ongoing projects, such as decoupling its Air Navigation Services from aviation regulation, in line with international best practice.

Inauguration

Inaugurating the board in Accra yesterday, the Minister of Aviation, Mrs Cecilia Abena Dapaah, told the members that attractive aviation infrastructure would help build capacity in the sector and establish the required institutional and policy framework to enhance the safety and security of air services in the Accra Flight Information Region (FIR).

She said another intervention of significance was the ongoing installation of modern equipment in the Accra FIR to ensure the safety and security of passengers and aircraft within the Accra FIR.

Among other responsibilities, the nine-member board is expected to collaborate with the management of the GCAA to achieve the government’s agenda of making the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) an aviation hub in the West African sub-region for international and regional airlines.

Membership

The board is chaired by Air Commodore Rexford Acquaah (retd), with other members being the Director General of the GCAA, Mr Simon Christopher Molai; Group Captain Eric Agyen-Frempong of the Ministry of Defence and Mr Ellis Hugh-Tamakloe of the Ministry of Aviation.

Others are Ms Joyce Opoku Boateng, a private legal practitioner; Mr Powis Deakens Spencer, Mrs Ernestina Swatson Eshun, Mr Kwesi Opoku-Ansah and Mr Sulemana Abudulai.

On behalf of the board, Air Commodore Acquaah expressed gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the confidence reposed in the members and gave an assurance that it would work hard to ensure that Ghana became the preferred destination of choice for travellers.
