Nene Tumeh commends Judicial Service for establishment of Somanya High Court

The acting President of the Yilo Krobo Traditional Council, Nene Tetteh Odonkor Tumeh, has commended the Judicial Service for the establishment of the Somanya High Court which, he said, would not serve only the Krobo area but nearby districts in the Eastern Region, including the Volta and Greater Accra regions.

Nene Tumeh said the geographical location of Somanya, one of the most vibrant towns in the southern part of the Eastern Region, made it more convenient for people to access the services of the high court, thereby saving the cost of travelling long distances to seek justice.

Establishment

Nene Tumeh, known in private life as Mr George Tetteh Odonkor, is a former lecturer of the University of Ghana and was the Member of Parliament for the Yilo Krobo Constituency during the Busia regime.

According to him, he initiated the establishment of the Somanya High Court during his time in Parliament, which the Judicial Service wholeheartedly embraced, adding; “Judicial Service has today fulfilled its promise and we are very grateful.’’

He, however, said the establishment of the court should not be a basis for unnecessary litigations, but advised the people to always resort to the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism to resolve their differences.

ADR

Nene Tumeh, who was speaking to the Daily Graphic on the sidelines of the inauguration of the court last week, said litigation sometimes promoted mistrust and enmity and did not bring about peace and harmony in any society, for which reason the people must always resort to the Court Connected Alternative Dispute Resolution (CCADR) mechanism.

“The establishment of the court will help improve administration of justice in our part of the country, but we should be mindful of the fact that litigation is quite expensive and, therefore, we must resort to the court as a last option,” he stated.

Advice

The chief said the central point of the Constitution was rule of law, which the courts were there to uphold; it was, therefore, important for the citizens in the area to be law abiding in order not to fall prey to the law.

“The law is no respecter of persons and, therefore, we should not pretend that if we commit a crime we shall not be punished; if we do that, then we might be deceiving ourselves because the law will not excuse you,’’ he added.

Nene Tumeh also admonished managers of the facility to ensure its regular maintenance.
