The National Security operative, whose name was given by the police as Martin Wuni, 45, was travelling with a Naval officer of the Eastern Naval Command in Tema in a Toyota Rav 4 vehicle, when he was shot at a close range.

According to the Northern Regional Police Command, Wuni was shot in his ribs by the robbers who had barricaded the road, ostensibly to rob occupants of vehicles plying the road.

The Naval officer (name withheld), who is said to have managed to escape unhurt, later led the police to the scene of the incident where the body of the security operative was found lying in the bush.

Investigations

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Ebenezer Tetteh, said the police had begun investigations into the incident and efforts were underway to apprehend the said robbers.

According to preliminary investigations by the police, the two security men were on their way from Accra to Garu in the Upper East Region when they were attacked by the robbers on the Walewale-Gambaga road.

Mr Tetteh said the two preferred to use the Walewale-Gambaga road because it was a shorter route to Garu.

The Naval officer had told the police that he was the one driving the vehicle at the time of the incident.

On reaching a section on the Walewale-Gambaga road, the Naval officer realised that robbers had barricaded the road.

He, therefore, reversed, but the vehicle ran into a ditch and the armed robbers, numbering four and armed with a locally manufactured single-barrelled gun, opened fire through the rear of the vehicle.

The Naval officer managed to escape, after struggling with one of the robbers, to a nearby village where he called the police for help.

The police arrived at the scene of the incident an hour later and, during a search, they found Wuni’s body lying in the bush.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital morgue, while investigations are underway.
