NADMO distributes relief items to K’dua flood victims

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has begun distributing relief items to flood victims in Koforidua Zongo and other communities after a heavy downpour that submerged some areas of the Eastern Regional capital last Sunday.

The relief items, valued at GH¢46,000, were presented to the affected communities by the Eastern Regional NADMO Coordinator, Mr Ransford Owusu Boakye and the New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Kwabena Okyere Kusi.

Items

The items included 100 pieces of mattresses, 300 pieces of blankets, 300 pieces of polymats, 50 bags of maize, 40 bags of rice and 10 cartons of cooking oil.

Other items were 10 cartons of mosquito coil, 500 pieces of mosquito nets, 10 bales of second hand clothing, 500 pieces of drinking cups, 500 plates and 100 buckets.

Presenting the items, Mr Boakye said the items would not be sufficient to cater for all the needs of the flood victims but would help to sustain them until their situation returned to normalcy.

He blamed the flooding on choked gutters due the deliberate dumping of refuse and construction of buildings on watercourses.

Mr Kusi urged the affected persons to remain calm as every household would be duly served.

Schools empty

The Daily Graphic observed that children in the Zongo community who were supposed to be in school could not attend classes due to the impact of the floods.

Some schools visited such as the Maadi Basic School and the AME Zion Basic School in the area were almost empty.

The heads of those schools, however, said the children were absent due to the Eid-ul-Adha and not the floods.

Downpour

A two-hour downpour in Koforidua last Sunday left parts of the Eastern Regional capital flooded when some streams and rivers burst their banks and submerged houses, roads and shops.

The floodwaters ran through residential areas, submerging mechanic workshops, chop bars, a church, block factories, filling stations and car washing bays.

The affected areas included Koforidua-Zongo, Yaw Kyeremakrom, Abrewa-Nkwanta along the Akwadum-Koforidua highway, Nsukwao, Asokore, Oyoko and Effiduase.

More than 200 residents at Koforidua Zongo, who were most affected by the floods, became stranded as the rains submerged their rooms and destroyed properties and food items they had bought to celebrate the Eid-ul-Adha.
