He stressed that vernacular could not be discarded in the name of modernity and civilisation, adding, “The local languages are our history and heritage.”

“We as parents must endeavour to speak our local languages with our wards as it goes a long way to ensure that our wards learn our history,” he said.

Mr Namoale, who was speaking at the 50th Anniversary of the Mothercare School in Accra, added that once such a practice was adopted, it would help children to speak the English language better.

The Director of the school, Ms Sheila Acquah Asare, delved into the history of the school, recounting the modest struggles of her late mum in establishing the institute 50 years ago.

Modern techniques

"Currently, the school is moving towards modern techniques to help make teaching and learning easier," she said.
She advised the schoolchildren to be law-abiding and respect their parents at all times.

The 50th Anniversary was marked on the theme: “50 years of holistic education towards national development: Advancing creativity and technology,” to sensitise the public to the progress of the school which had produced hundreds of individuals working in various fields in the society.

As part of the celebration, the school awarded certificates to the best pupils and students from kindergarten two, junior high school and the graduates of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE).

An anniversary magazine was unveiled during the event.
