Mother appeals for public support to save child’s life

The mother of a baby with multiple congenital limb deformities, Mrs Hannah Sakyi, is appealing to the general public to help her raise GH¢4,000.00 which is the estimated cost of two surgeries to correct the deformities at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).

The baby, now three months old and on admission at the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, was born with the abnormalities in both feet and second finger of the right hand.

Doctors at the centre, where the procedures will be held, say the deformities were due to Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS), a group of birth defects that result when strands of the amniotic sac detach and wrap around parts of the baby in the womb.

Mr E. Anyigba of the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre of the KBTH said, “a final bill would be given after discharge, with a follow-up, two weeks after discharge, barring any complications. Payment by cheque should be in the name of Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre.

“The deformities were noticed after birth and we were referred to Korle Bu for surgery. We were advised to bring him for the surgery when he was three months old, but to date, we had not been able to raise money to fund the cost of the surgery,” Mrs Sakyi told the Daily Graphic.

She is, therefore, appealing to philanthropists, corporate and civil society organisations and individuals to help save the life of her child.
