Methodist University inducts new principal

A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, has been inducted as the new Principal of the Methodist University College (MUCG).

The ceremony was held on the premises of Mount Olivet Methodist Church in Accra and conducted by the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church and Chairman of the MUCG Council, Most Rev. Titus K. Awotwe Pratt.

It attracted people from all walks of life, including the academia, chiefs and the clergy.

Advice

Administering the oath of office, Most Rev. Awotwe Pratt urged the inductee to institute measures that would prevent corrupt practices in the institution, stating that leadership was a call to servitude and accountability.

He further asked Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw to work hard at ensuring that the university got a presidential charter to operate as a fully fledged university.

Consolidation of gains

The immediate past Principal of the university, Very Rev. Prof. Samuel Kwasi Adjepong, entreated his successor to put in place structures and programmes that would consolidate the gains made by the Methodist Church in the education sector.

He said the changing trends in the global world required the redesigning of the curriculum of the university to reflect the needs of industry, for which reason he called on the Methodist Church to continue to support the MUG with infrastructure and other facilities.

Prof. Adjepong further indicated that: “We have advanced processes to ensure that MUCG is granted a presidential charter to be an autonomous university and we hope that in the next few months that dream will be realised. What this means is that we have to continue to do the right thing to attract more students and to remain relevant in society.”

Pledge

Prof. Asabere-Ameyaw said the depth of experience he had gathered in education management spanning over two decades would be a valuable resource to him as he strived to promote the image of the institution.

According to him, he would anchor his administrative strategy on teamwork and stakeholder engagements to ensure the accelerated development of the university.

He also pledged to employ the tenets of good university management, which thrived on effective monitoring mechanisms, probity and accountability and the strengthening of institutional structures.

The Principal added that he would also work to improve upon Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure to facilitate teaching and learning.

“Emphasis will also be placed on investment in research since that is the best way to discover new knowledge that will fuel development,” he stressed.

To help achieve these objectives, the principal called on the Methodist Church to support the university with seed money that would serve as a buffer for the institution to fall on during challenging times.
