MCE stops Ken Agyepong from inaugurating market at Assin Fosu

There was near fisticuffs Friday between the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Assin North Dr Kofi Blankson and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Mr Kennedy Agyapong over who owns the right to inaugurate a market built for the area.

The MCE, who is also a Parliamentary Candidate, eventually stopped the MP from opening up the market for use at Assin Fosu in the Central region.

The inauguration of the market built by the MP’s common fund for the people in the municipality generated a heated argument over who has the right to open it.

While it was the contention of the MCE that the facility was provided by the government and that the representative of same must lead in the inauguration programme, the MP argued that since it was built by the MP’s common fund, the latter must lead the inauguration.

The MCE was reported to have said the MP had constructed the market with government resources and would not allow him to use it to gain political points.

The MCE was said to have indicated that there was no way the Vice Presidential Candidate of the NPP, who is currently on tour of the area should be allowed to inaugurate the project when it was not an NPP project.

DA/MP Partnership

He said the best the MP was expected to do was to have invited and partnered with the assembly to inaugurate the project

The market had been decorated, ready to be inaugurated as part of the NPP’s Vice Presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s visit to the area but this did not happen.

A mini rally was held as part of the visit.

The market is reported to have been taken over by armed security men with authorization from the MCE.

The MP later addressed the supporters of the NPP and explained that he chose peace and would not want the issue to degenerate into violence hence his decision to let matters rest.
