The accused person, Edward Kodjo Tawiah, in the company of an accomplice identified only as Eric, aka Abodam, who is now at large, are alleged to have attacked the family at Haatso, near Accra, on March 28.

They are reported to have ransacked the house and taken away some valuables.

Tawiah has been charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and three counts of robbery, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

He has been remanded into police custody, to reappear on April 18, 2017.

Robbery operation

The prosecutor, Superintendent of Police Mr Kweku Bempah, told the court that at 3 a.m. on March 28, 2017, Tawiah and Abodam, in face masks and armed with a pistol, broke into a house at Haatso and forcibly entered the bedroom of the couple living in the house.

They ordered them to show them where they (couple) kept the money they had brought to the house the previous day.

The man, the prosecutor said, told the robbers that there was no money in the house. That made the robbers drag him from the bed and tie his hands and those of his wife.

“They then took the man’s phone, valued at GH¢1,300, his gold necklace, valued at GH¢8,000, and his wife’s mobile phone, valued at GH¢5,000, and her engagement and wedding rings, valued at GH¢6,000,’’ the prosecutor said.

Police intervention

Superintendent Bempah said the robbers entered the couple’s 14-year-old son’s room and took his mobile phone, valued at GH¢750, and a laptop, valued at GH¢2,000.

He said the couple’s daughter, whose room had not been seen by the robbers, made a phone call to her friend, who in turn called a police patrol team.

The police patrol team rushed to the house and Abodam, on seeing the team, fired at them and they responded by shooting back.

The robbers ran to the first floor and jumped through a window to the ground. Tawiah hurt himself in the process and was arrested.  Abodam managed to escape.
