The woman, identified as Faustina Owusu, 56, is said to have died on the spot, while her son, Benedict Owusu, is at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in a critical condition.

The suspect, Thomas Kofi Owusu, allegedly handed himself over to the Amasaman Police and reported that he had killed his wife and his child in their rented room at Dankyira.

He is currently being held by the police.

Owusu is alleged to have committed the act during an argument with his wife about 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2016.

The cause of the argument is yet to be established by the police.

Argument

It is said the couple had been married for seven years and lived in a rented chamber and a hall room at Dankyira with the woman’s 13- year-old niece for the past four years.

According to some residents, the couple were heard screaming at each other in a heated argument for about an hour before the woman’s niece came out shouting for help after the argument had ceased.

Police investigations revealed that while the couple were arguing in their bedroom, their son and the woman’s niece were watching television in the living room.

At a point, it was said that Faustina attempted to go out of the room but Owusu prevented her by pulling her inside and threatened to hit her with a pinch bar.

It is said their son rushed into the bedroom to find out what was happening but Owusu hit his wife on the head, and when his son questioned him, the boy was also hit with the metal rod instantly.

Owusu is said to have attempted to hit his wife’s 13-year-old niece but he spared her life after the girl had pleaded continuously for mercy, amid tears.

However, police reports indicate that as soon as the girl’s life was spared, she rushed out of the room and raised an alarm.

Suspect not talking

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Afia Tenge, confirmed the incident.

She said the Amasaman Police received a complaint from the suspect around 8:30 p.m. last Sunday and when the police proceeded to the house, both the mother and her child were lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom.

The boy, who was unconscious, she said, was taken to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment, while Faustina’s body was deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation.

She said Owusu, who had been in police custody since then, had refused to talk to the police, claiming he would start speaking with the approval of his lawyer, who is yet to contact the police.
