Ohene was charged with murder when he appeared before the court, presided over by Mr James Kono Botah, but his plea was not taken.

He has been remanded into police custody pending investigations.

The facts of the case presented to the court by Chief Inspector Victor Dosoo were that Ohene and Beatrice Ama Osah (deceased) were husband and wife who had been married for 15 years with two children.

The prosecutor said on July 18, 2016 at about 8:30p.m., there was a misunderstanding over the use of a ceiling fan which was turned on.

Beatrice reported that she was feeling cold, so it should be turned off, while Ohene insisted it should be left on.

C/Inspector Dosoo said this resulted in Ohene pushing Beatrice down and beating her mercilessly with his fists, hands and legs, and further using a plastic stool to hit her.

He said when all attempts by Beatrice to prevent Ohene from beating her failed, she shouted for help.

C/Inspector Dosoo said the landlady’s attention was drawn, but she was unable to open the door since it was locked.

A witness in the case, Mary Nti, who is also the niece of Beatrice, managed to rescue the deceased who had sustained injuries on her forehead and body.

Prosecutor Dosoo said on July 19, 2016, her condition deteriorated. On July 20, 2016 at 3:00 a.m., she was rushed to the Dansoman Polyclinic and then referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital where she died while receiving treatment.

According to the prosecutor, Mary, who is also the complainant, suspected the death of her aunt was as a result of the beatings she received from her husband.

Ohene was subsequently arrested and handed over to the police.

The prosecutor told the court the body is at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.
