Man assaults sister, baby

A trader, Henry Korletey, has been put before an Accra Magistrates’ court for beating up his sister and her baby in an attempt to beat up  his young nephew.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault when he appeared before the court presided over by Mr James Kojo Botah.

Korletey was granted bail in the sum of GH₵5,000 with two sureties. He was also asked to pay GH₵2,000 as security deposit.

Korletey was able to satisfy his bail conditions.

The Prosecutor, Sergeant Eric Pobee, told the court that Mavis Korletey and Henry Korletey both lived in a compound house at Pig Farm in Accra. However, the relationship between the two siblings have not been cordial for some time.

According to the prosecutor, on June 29, 2016 at about 5.30 p.m. Henry chased Mavis’ son with a stick in an attempt to beat him up for allegedly beating another boy.

The child ran into their kitchen and took refuge behind his mother who was carrying a one-year-old baby girl.

He said Mavis asked Henry to exercise restraint but he refused and severally hit Mavis on the neck and on her arms. In the process, the baby also sustained bruises on her body, which resulted in bodily pains.

Sergeant Pobee said onlookers came to rescue Mavis and the child and a report was made to the police. Medical forms were issued to Mavis and her baby to attend hospital for treatment.

On receipt of the endorsed medical report, the Police invited Henry to assist with investigation but he failed to report to them.

Sergeant Pobee said on July 15, 2016, a summons was obtained from the court and a copy was served on accused person to appear before it.
