Main flyover of Kasoa Interchange opens

A little over a year after construction began, President John Dramani Mahama cut the ribbon to open the main flyover of the Kasoa Interchange last Wednesday.

The flyover spans 715 metres.

Two other flyovers under construction are the East Interchange from Galilea to Amanfrom and the West Interchange from Universal to link the CP area.

It was a scene to behold as the crowd cheered as the President's motorcade drove on the bridge after it was opened.

Although the entire project is yet to be completed, the opening of the first flyover linking the Obom Junction to the Winneba end of the Accra-Cape Coast road was met with excitement as it is expected to bring relief to commuters.

A multitude of people thronged the project site to witness the opening of the four-lane dual carriage flyover.

Over time, increased vehicular traffic on the Kasoa-Winneba road, especially during rush hours, resulted in commuters taking between two and three hours to drive through Kasoa and Budumburam.

Integrated project

The Kasoa interchange is an integrated project.

The ancillary projects in the package include the construction of four basic schools with a polyclinic at Kasoa to replace the existing one and 10 boreholes in selected communities, among other facilities within the project area.

Construction work started in August 2015 and is being undertaken by M/S Queiroz Galvao, a Brazilian construction firm.

Speech

President Mahama, who had lost his voice as a result of the intense campaigning, did not give a speech himself. He assigned the Minister of Roads and Highways, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, to speak on his behalf to open the flyover.

The minister said the project was dear to the heart of the government as it would reduce the gridlock associated with vehicular movement on the stretch.

He said the President's transformational agenda for the nation was on course.

He commended the construction firm for the good work it was doing.

Alhaji Inusah also told the large gathering about other road initiatives that were being undertaken by the government in the Central Region and explained that they were meant to improve the economies of the communities.
