Mahama inaugurates Kpando water supply expansion project
President John Dramani Mahama on Monday inaugurated the Kpando water supply expansion project as he arrived in the Volta Region on his campaign tour to a rapturous welcome.

Hundreds blazed the sun to line the streets waving NDC flags as the President's motorcade went through town to the site of the project.
The original water system was based on underground systems using boreholes and its maximum production capacity was 130,000 gallons a day which was unable to meet the current demands.
However, the new system, which will pump 1.5 million gallons a day, draws water from the Volta Lake at Tokor to the treatment plant at Kpando. The project's life span extends to 2025.
It was built at the cost of about $13 million and will serve Kpando, Sovie, Anfoega, Nkonya Ahenkro, and other surrounding communities.
To ensure effective distribution of the volume of water a day, 110 km of pipe lines has been laid to various communities while 50 stand pipes has been constructed. The Ghana Water Company is managing the project.
Kpando came alive with the President's presence.
The Volta Region has been the heart of the NDC since 1992, registering huge votes in all the six elections conducted.
In the 2012 presidential elections, Mr Mahama had 734,641 votes representing 85.47 per cent of valid ballots while his closest challenger, Nana Akufo-Addo had 111,149 votes representing 12.39 per cent.
The NPP has performed abysmally in the region. In the 2012 election, the Nkwanta North parliamentary seat, the only seat the NPP won in the Volta Region in the 2008 election was snatched by the NDC.
Volta region not neglected
Giving an overview for water in the Volta Region, the President said , "This is one region this government has been very successful and has invested heavily in."
He said from a water coverage of 39.74 per cent in 2013, coverage was now about 70 per cent.
The President also took time to mention some of the projects undertaken in the Kpando area .
Following what the government had done in the region in terms of development, he said, he tended not to understand why some people kept saying that the Volta Region had been neglected.
He described the allegations as "propaganda" and "wicked lies."
President Mahama said the government was working on accreditation for the Nurses Training College in Kpando.
He also stated that contract had been awarded for the asphalting of the road from the Kpando traffic lights to Kpando Tokor, in addition to the Kpando town roads.
The Fiaga of Gbefi, Togbe Akom VIII, in a welcoming address, commended the President for the effective manner he had steered the affairs of the country.
He said the Kpando Municipal Area had benefitted from many development projects under President Mahama.
Rally
After inaugurating the water project, the President addressed teeming supporters of the NDC at a rally in Kpando.
He again took on his opponents who wanted to discredit him and the NDC with false information about the neglect of the Volta Region.
President Mahama told the crowd he was optimistic about the future of the country and added that once the choice the electorates make in December would determine the county's direction it was important to retain the NDC in power to ensure accelerated development.
