Madina Lorry Park to become modern terminal

The management of the Madina Lorry Park (MLP) in the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipality in Accra, Decorbuild Limited, has disclosed its intention to turn the park into a modern bus terminal.

Management has, therefore, entreated users of the facility, particularly commercial drivers, to be patient, since plans are underway to put up a first-class terminal at the site before the year ends.

In an interaction with some drivers on Tuesday, July 26 this year, they blamed management of the park for the bad condition of the facility.

According to them, poor conditions at the park had compelled commuters to board vehicles by the roadside. That, the commercial drivers said, had angered them because it was affecting their business.

Last Friday, the Daily Graphic visited the facility and can confirm that clearing works leading to the construction of a new terminal had begun.

Refurbishment of MLP

Management of the facility indicated that the decision to modernise the park was influenced by the growing population in the municipality who use the facility, as well as pressure that was put on existing facilities by commuters within Accra and travellers to other parts of the country on a daily basis.

According to the management, the new terminal under construction is expected to accommodate more vehicles.

In addition, it said the new facility would have 130 water closet toilets, a number of bathrooms and urinals, offices for various transport unions, conference rooms and two waste trucks.

Management, however, could not disclose the cost of the project, but said preparations were ongoing for construction works to begin before the end of the year.

Public toilet

The Chairman of the Madina-Adenta Drivers Union, Mr Ernest Tham, on behalf of the commercial drivers operating at the park, commended the management of the facility for the decision to rehabilitate the station.

He expressed worry, however, regarding a sewage tank from a public toilet at the lorry park that frequently spewed its contents onto the road leading to the park.

According to him, the toilet, located at the entrance to the lorry park, is hindering the sustainability of the rebuilding exercise.

“Leaking sewage from the toilet flowing into the park will make the rehabilitation efforts by management useless unless something timely is done about it.

“We were not facing this problem until about a year ago,” he said.

Mr Tham, therefore, appealed to the municipal assembly to demolish the public toilet “because it is causing more harm than good”.
