Lower Manya Krobo audit committee inaugurated

The Lower Manya-Krobo Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region has inaugurated a five-member audit committee and charged it to exhibit a high sense of professionalism in the discharge of its duty.

Addressing the committee members, the acting Internal Auditor of the assembly, Mr Ransford Agyei, said the role of the audit committee was very important in the financial management of the assembly.

He said there was the need for the team to help address certain financial issues that might crop up from the internal auditors, adding that “you are here to support the work of the internal auditors to succeed and not to find faults with them.”

The committee has Mrs Gloria Dami Baah of the Internal Audit Agency of the assembly as its chairperson. Other members are Mr Alex Tamatey of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG), Mr Emmanuel Kofi Odum also of ICAG, Mr Benjamin Awulley Mensah, the Presiding Member for the Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly and Mr Samuel Adjinbaruk, an assembly member.

Mr Agyei asked the committee to discharge its duties in accordance with the Public Financial Management Act and other related financial and operational regulations, laws and policies of the assembly.

“He also urged them to be honest, objective and competent in the discharge of their duties, saying you need to put the interest of the assembly before any other thing.

Advisory roles

The acting Director- General of Internal Audit Agency tasked the committee members to know the bye-laws, the Acts, the policies and plans of the assembly that related to the areas to enable them play their advisory roles well to help the assembly.

“As members of the audit committee, your integrity, competence, and confidentiality are at stake as you are not a secret committee, and I know that the team is the best and capable of doing what the Acts and policies mandate you to do,’’ Mr Agyei added.

The Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Simon Kweku Tetteh, said the functions of the committee had been spelt out in their working documents and urged them not to deviate from it, adding “I will help to facilitate your work without being a hindrance to you.’’

He said as the committee was going to work with very vital financial documents, they must always do well to scrutinise all the documents to avoid errors.

He said he was going to work with the financial regulations and pleaded with the committee members to always update him on issues that might arise at their meetings for redress so that the assembly would not face the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), as it happened to other assemblies in the country.

On behalf of the committee, the Chairperson of the committee thanked both the audit service and the assembly reposed in them and pledged to do what was expected of them in accordance with the regulations of the Audit Service.
