She said the community as a stakeholder also had a major role to play in achieving quality health care for all.

Mrs Mahama, who made the call at Sunyani last Thursday when the Lordina Foundation  presented  assorted medical equipment and supplies to the Sunyani Municipal Hospital, said there was the need for all to endeavour to work towards enhancing the work of health professionals in order to improve the safety and quality of health care for people.

Items received included incubators, ultra scan machines, hospital beds, theatre beds, mattresses, refrigerators, furniture, wheelchairs, blood pressure devices, bedside tables, syringes, forceps, catheters and a blood sample machine.

The First Lady also inaugurated a newly constructed hospital administration block.

Significant decrease

She said according to the Ghana Demographic and Health Survey, there had been a significant decrease in the rate of infant mortality and under five mortality, as well as a remarkable improvement in antenatal, intra-partum and post-natal deaths, but much is needed to be done to eliminate maternal mortality completely.

The First Lady said that achievement could not be celebrated without first and foremost commending all the hardworking health professionals, especially those who were working in deprived communities.

“It is my conviction that health professionals must be motivated to contribute their part in helping government fulfil the obligation of protecting the health of citizens. At the same time all other stakeholders must contribute in achieving this,” she said.

Health for all

She said  that was why the Lordina Foundation was helping to save lives and supporting government’s programmesof achieving health for all and added that the Sunyani Municipal hospital had played a major role in uplifting the health status of people in and around the catchment area.

Mrs Mahama said with its vision of being a world-class healthcare facility of repute with best practice in healthcare, as well as training of high calibre medical personnel, the hospital had continued to provide quality care to the people of Sunyani.

This is commendable and I would like to thank the staff and management of this hospital for their hard work and dedication to healthcare delivery.

She recalled that following the  free screening for HIV/AIDS, breast and cervical cancers  carried out in Sunyani earlier  in collaboration with the Ghana AIDS Commission, the Ghana chapter of OAFLA successfully launched the Global “All-In” Campaign.

Mrs Mahama reiterated her commitment as President of OAFL to advocate a united continental movement to implement the Global “All In” Adolescent HIV Campaign.

Infrastructure

The First Lady noted that in line with its commitment to upgrade health facilities to improve healthcare delivery and access to health care across the country, the government had embarked on massive extension and expansion of infrastructure in the health sector across the country.

She said new hospitals, polyclinics, district and regional hospitals, CHIPS compounds and outpost mobile vans called ‘Onuado’ were being rolled out in addition to the hospital’s retooling programme which was currently ongoing.

Mrs Mahama expressed her appreciation to Medshare USA and other sponsors for making the presentation of these equipment and items to the Sunyani Regional Hospital possible.

For his part, the Chief of Sunyani, Nana Kwaku Saben II, thanked the First Lady for her hard work and dedication to the underprivileged in the society.
