Live above reproach - KOSS Board of Governors told

A new Board of Governors for the Konongo Odumase Senior High School has been inducted into office with a charge on members to live above reproach in the discharge of their duties.

The members were also admonished to think about what they could do individually and collectively as a board to improve conditions in the school rather than what the school could do for them.

The Regional Director of Education, Mrs Mary Owusu Achiaw, made these important points at the ceremony that saw Dr Philip Amakye, a nominee of the Konongo Traditional Council and an old boy, elected as the new Board chairman to replace the late Nana Owusu Donkor, who died on July 1, this year after heading the board for about 20 years.

Mrs Owusu Achiaw reminded the board members that it was a great privilege and honour to serve on the board of any senior high school because of the relevance of fostering a harmonious relationship between the school and the community in order to ensure adequate support of the community for the school.

The regional director advised them to pay regular visits to the school and not wait until problems came up in the school before attempting a firefighting move.

“Know the vision, aspirations and challenges of the school authorities and try to join hands with them to find solutions for the betterment of the school”, she added.

Academic excellence

According to Mrs Owusu Achiaw, the academic excellence of any school depended, to a large extent, on discipline. She, therefore, entreated the board members to help the school authorities to maintain a high level of discipline at all times to promote effective teaching and learning so as to improve the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results of the school.

She made it clear that if the nature of a case called for the dismissal of a student, the recommendation of the board must be referred to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) through the regional director for approval, while the affected student, in the interim, was placed on suspension.

Touching on the role of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) in the development of education, the regional director urged the board to take active interest in the activities of the PTA, especially in the area of levying of fees, stressing that any fee introduced by the PTA for school development should have the initial approval of the school board even before it was sent to the Director-General, through the regional director, for final approval.

Advice to headmasters

Finally, Mrs Owusu Achiaw advised the headmistress to be conscious of the existence of the board and consult them on all major issues in order to have peace and order in the school.

The new board includes the Municipal Director of Education, Rev. Kwame Opoku; the PTA Chairman, Nana Kofi Antwi II; the Odumasehene and Mr Prince Kwarteng.

Others are Alhaji Razak El-Alawa, representing the old students; Mr Yaw Kwakye and Mr Bernard Owusu-Ansah.

The rest are Mr Bawa Daudu, Nana Oduro Frimpong, the headmistress and the assistant headmaster (Admin) who will serve as the secretary to the board.
