Let’s say no to instant justice — Nana Owusu Asar

The Akwamuhene of Wuramponso in the Ashanti Region Nana Barima Owusu Asar has called on Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of reporting suspected criminals to the police rather than take the laws into their own hands through instant justice.

According to him, reporting such persons to the police would ensure social order rather than lawlessness which could lead to violence.

The police too, he said, must expedite action on criminal cases reported to them to ensure that the citizenry had confidence and trust in them when it came to dispensing justice.

Nana Barima Asar said this during an interaction with journalists at his palace at Wuramponso following the alleged killing of Captain Maxwell Mahama by a mob at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central region.

He said reporting suspected criminals to the police would save the lives of innocent persons who might find themselves at places they were not familiar with but went there to visit someone, engage in a business activity or attend school.

He condemned mob injustices and called for a collective action to deal with such a problem which tarnish the image of the country, adding that “claiming the lives of innocent people can have a serious impediments on our democratic dispensation”.

Barima Asar said even if someone was caught engaged in a criminal activity the person should not be killed but be made to face the law.

“We must allow our laws to work,” he said, and extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Major Mahama and the Ghana Armed Forces.
