Let’s not encourage galamsey - Rt Rev. Dr Dogbe

The Presiding Bishop of the Western West Africa Episcopal District of the AME Zion Church, Right Rev. Dr Hilliard Dogbe, has added his voice to the campaign against galamsey, calling on all Ghanaians to frown upon the negative practice.

He stated that galamsey was not only destroying the environment but the country’s water bodies— the sources of livelihood for the people.

“I believe that we need to frown upon it and fish these people out and encourage them to go into the appropriate way of doing this kind of thing. I believe that would be a healthy thing to do,” he said in an interaction with journalists at the Bishop Speaks AME Zion Church at Accra New Town, where he was the Guest preacher.

It was his first visit to the church following his assumption of office as the Presiding Bishop of the Western-West Africa Episcopal District of the AME Zion Church last year.

Before then Rt Rev. Dr Dogbe had served the Bishop Speaks AME Zion Church for nine years where he was the pastor in charge.

Rt Rev. Dogbe noted that as individuals “we have a responsibility to care for the environment, so any act of humans that seeks to destroy it should not be encouraged.”

He said galamsey was not an appropriate way of generating wealth, adding that healthy practice sanctioned by law to mine minerals from the ground should rather be encouraged.

Earlier in a sermon titled “At the appointed time something good is going to happen”, Rt Rev. Dr Dogbe urged the congregation to put their trust in God because at the appropriate time, He would respond to their needs.

Quoting from 2 Kings 4:8-17, he said at the appointed time their fears would be eliminated and that their faith would be elevated and their favour established.

“Beloved, I don’t know what you are going through., I do not know what your situation is but one thing I know for sure that at your appointed time something good is going to happen to you,” he stated.

The Pastor in charge of the Bishop Speaks AME Zion Church, Rev. Felix Dodor, who is also the Presiding Elder of the Accra Central District of the church, said Rt Rev. Dr Dogbe was instrumental in the building of a chapel for the church.

Rt Rev. Dr Dogbe’s presence at the church, he said, was a homecoming since he had made a positive impact in the lives of the people when he was the pastor in charge.
