The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and queenmothers have organised a seminar in Accra on how to engage women in the land administration project.

The three-day seminar seeks to encourage women to show more interest in land administration and draw strategies on how to balance gender equality in the country.

It was jointly organised by the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources, Second Ghana Land Administration Project and the National Association of Women Traditional Leaders.

Opening the seminar, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Professor Baneong Yakubu, said it  would update the knowledge and skills of the queenmothers in the administration of land.

He also said in trying to achieve an efficient land adminstration project, it was important to recognise women, and added  that queenmothers played vital roles in the traditional governance system.

Challenges

The President of the National Association of Women Traditional Leaders, Nana Abena Boatemaa, said women suffered most under the current inheritance and land systems, since most of them did not have the right to own land.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Nii Osah Mills, said the course was unique because it was the broad framework under which the Land Administration Project One (LAP-1) was initiated in order to stimulate economic growth, promote social stability and reduce poverty by developing an efficient and fair land system.

Mr Mills said the government had a social development programme under the Ghana Shared Growth and Development Agenda (GSGDA) which the President had vowed to pursue.

“This capacity-building seminar  recognises the vital and critical role of  women in the effective management of land in the country,” he said.
