Students of the Kwadaso College of Agriculture (KAC) have abandoned the campus to protest the non-restoration of their trainee allowance.

The students had since October 13, 2017 boycotted lectures, with most of them packing out of campus.

Meanwhile, the management of the school has expressed concern about the disruption of the school calendar.

No return

The National President of the Agriculture College Students Union (AGSU), Mr Sampson Chimbur Sananka, told the Daily Graphic in an interview that the students would not return to campus until they received favourable news from the government on the restoration of their allowances.

He said it was better for the students to stay at home than to go back to the campuses, “since when we complete school, there is no job anywhere for us to do.”

According to him, students of the agriculture colleges paid for almost everything, from school fees to practicals with the hope that the allowance would cushion them.

“Currently, there is no hope for students of agriculture colleges. If the government thinks that our services are needed, it should respond to our demand,” he said.

School’s response

When contacted, the Vice Principal of the college, Mr Bright Akoto, said he was surprised at the decision of the students.

According to him, the students’ action of boycotting lectures and vacating campus was the first time it was happening in the history of the school.

However, Mr Akoto said students of agricultural colleges nationwide had boycotted lectures.

The entire campus was virtually empty as only a few students could be spotted when this reporter visited the college.

Picketing

Students of all the five agricultural colleges nationwide picketed at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture on October 11, to protest the government’s delay in restoring the trainee allowance.

They also served notice that they would boycott lectures if the government failed to respond positively to their demand.
