The increase in population across the country, according to the police, has led to an increase in criminal activities and it will take collaboration between the communities and the police to curb the rising crime rate.

The Director General, Technical, of the Ghana Police Service, Commissioner of Police (COP) Ms Rose Bio-Atinga, made the call when she inaugurated a new police station for residents of Kwabenya ACP in the Ga East Municipality in Accra.

The modern police facility, built by Franco Estate Developers Limited, has an office for the station officer, a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) office, a charge office and two cells for male and female suspects.

Commendation

Ms Bio-Atinga said fighting crime in communities all over the world was a shared responsibility between citizens and the police, hence the need for the public to partner the police to discharge their mandate.

Since the construction of the police station, Ms Bio-Atinga observed, some criminal activities such as car snatching, burglary, land guards activities and robbery which were on the rise had decreased drastically.

She commended Franco Estate for constructing the police station to help combat crime in the community and urged other estate developers to emulate the good example of constructing police stations and providing accommodation for the police to enable them to provide security for clients and neighbouring communities.

Ms Bio-Atinga urged the policemen posted to the station to ensure that the facility was maintained to serve the purpose it was intended for.

Cost

The Kwabenya District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr Bright Boafo, appealed to residents to assist the police with a patrol vehicle and accommodation for the policemen attached to the Kwabenya ACP Police Station.

For his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Franco Estate, Mr Francis Kwesi Nyankson, said the facility, which cost GH¢300,000, was provided to help the police fight crime in the area.

He said since the area was now developing, criminals and other miscreants used nearby bushes and uncompleted buildings as their hideout to terrorise residents.

He gave an assurance that the company would consider the request for residential accommodation for the policemen to ensure the provision of full security in the area.
